(1)   understand sentences that include “can” and “can’t”

(2)   make “can” and “can’t” sentence on their own

(3)   pronounce “can” and “can’t” clearly

Introduction

Greetings and introduce the meaning of “can” and “can’t” to the students, practice pronouncing, followed by a few, simple example sentences written on the blackboard.

Greetings, listening to the explanation and orally translate simple example sentences from the blackboard.

Superheroes

The teachers have pictures of superheroes, which the students cannot see, and use simple “can” and “can’t” sentences to describe the superheroes abilities.  Anpanman, Astroboy and Ultraman work well.

Students listen to the teachers’ clues and must guess the superheroes identity.  Rewards are given for a correct answer.

Print

Pass out a simple print for the students to write 2 or 3 sentences for things they can do and 2 or 3 sentences for things they can’t do.

Write 2 or 3 sentences each for things they can and can’t do.

New

Superheroes

Prepare a small drawing of a new, original superhero before class.  Around the drawing there should be 3 things the new superhero can and can’t do.  Paper and markers are given to the students.

Working in pairs, students create their own, original superhero with a drawing and a list of 3 things the superhero can and can’t do.
